LOS ANGELES, Calif. Shaq Mason Jersey . - The Clippers didnt shoot well, couldnt build more than a 10-point lead, and still managed to usher in the Steve Ballmer era with a victory for their new owner.Blake Griffin scored 23 points, making two free throws with five seconds left, and Chris Paul added 22 in a season-opening 93-90 win Thursday over the Oklahoma City Thunder, who lost another star to injury when Russell Westbrook broke his right hand.It was pretty ugly, Clippers coach Doc Rivers said. We have 81 more games to fix it.Los Angeles hardly resembled its new ad campaign of Be Relentless early on, when the Thunder scored the games first eight points as Ballmer cupped his hands and yelled to his team from his baseline seat near their bench. He paid a record $2 billion to buy the team after 33-year owner Donald Sterling was banned for life by the NBA for racist remarks. The Thunder sent the Clippers packing in the second round of the playoffs last spring, shortly after the Sterling scandal erupted. What I was proud of, they kept fighting defensively, Rivers said. I dont know that we win this game last year.Already without injured Kevin Durant, the Thunder lost Westbrook to a small fracture in his right hand in the second quarter. He left Staples Center wearing a soft cast on his hand and didnt talk with reporters. He will be reassessed Friday. Its unfortunate the way it is right now, but we have to figure out how to get better from all of our experiences, Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. Good teams and good players bounce back from adversity, and our guys understand that.Perry Jones scored a career-high 32 points, making 9 of 11 free throws. The Thunder are 0-2, having dropped their opener a night earlier at Portland.Serge Ibakas 3-pointer at the buzzer went off the rim. He finished with 17 points.Westbrook appeared to hurt his hand while going for a rebound in a crowd. He didnt return and finished with two points and four assists in eight minutes. He appeared to have a verbal exchange with a fan while exiting through the tunnel.Im just glad we all fought and didnt give up despite the injury, Jones said. I dont know why its going on, but all we can do is play our hearts out and keep fighting until everybody gets back. The Thunder cut the deficit to four points on a 3-pointer by Ibaka with 4 1/2 minutes left in the game. J.J. Redick answered with a 3-pointer after missing his first seven shots to extend the Clippers lead to 89-82.During a timeout, the video board flashed to Ballmer, his face contorted and his hands clapping furiously as fans cheered. In wrinkled khaki pants and a checkered shirt, and his credential hung around his neck, Ballmer looked like an average fan.The Thunder cut it to one and after their 27th turnover, Telfair fouled Paul, who missed both free throws with 13 seconds to go.I will be here early to shoot some, Paul said.Telfair forced up an out-of-control shot that missed and Adams fouled Griffin in a scramble for the ball with 5 seconds left. Griffin hit both free throws, which the Clippers needed because Nick Collison got fouled and made both to cut it to 91-90 with 4 seconds to go.Griffin fouled out after he and Ibaka were called for double fouls. Redick made up for his earlier misses when he went to the line and hit both free throws for a 93-90 lead with 2 seconds left. The Clippers shot 39 per cent from the floor and got outrebounded 47-33.We had to defend in order to win the game, Paul said. Thats what great teams are built off of, defence and rebounding.Sterlings estranged wife Shelly was in her usual midcourt seat. She retained it, along with some other perks, and was given the title of owner emeritus by Ballmer as part of the sale. New NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, who banned Donald Sterling, was applauded when he was introduced after the first quarter.Oklahoma Citys early lead took the home crowd out of it moments after the pregame hype ended. Before the Clippers were introduced, they stood watching a video that proclaimed it a new time in franchise history.QUOTE OF THE NIGHTI dont have a K.D. countdown every day, Brooks said.TIP-INSThunder: G Reggie Jackson (right ankle sprain) and G Jeremy Lamb (lower back sprain) sat out. Durant sat on the bench, wearing a walking boot with his black suit.Clippers: F Glen Davis is out with a strained right groin, but he ran on Thursday and could return next week. ... Paul had seven assists to pass Hall of Famer John Havlicek for 28th on the career list with 6,119. ... They improved to 21-24 on opening night.UP NEXTThunder: Host Denver on Saturday in their home opener.Clippers: Are the designated visiting team against the Lakers on Friday. John Hannah Jersey . -- Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera has a broken bone below his right eye after being struck by a bad-hop grounder, sidelining the star slugger for at least a week with opening day on deck. Jimmy Garoppolo Jersey .That is precisely what they got Sunday. The Ravens trailed at halftime and never built a comfortable lead against lowly Jacksonville, yet did just enough to squeeze out a 20-12 win to stay in the thick of the AFC playoff race. .Impact president Joey Saputo confirmed Thursday that he is part of a group of investors whose offer to buy the 105-year-old Italian club was accepted by the teams board of directors.TORONTO - Christmas is often a busy, stressful time, especially for hockey players who have to balance family and professional obligations. But for James Reimer and David Booth of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Christmas brings perspective and an opportunity to reflect and appreciate on how fortunate they are to play professional hockey while observing their faith.Whether youre a carpenter, or a plumber, a hockey player or an airline pilot, your lifes going to get crazy no matter what, said Reimer, while still in his goalie pads after practice on Friday. Things are going to happen and stuff. When you have something like Christ to lean on, it just adds a peace that surpasses all understanding. Its such a gift to be able to have that perspective, especially when things are going rough.Although the NHLs collective bargaining agreement guarantees that players get Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day off, theres still a lot of travel over the holidays for hockey teams. The Maple Leafs, for example, played in Chicago on Sunday, played in Dallas on Tuesday night and will continue a seven-game road trip in Florida on Dec. 28.The American Hockey League has an even tighter holiday window, with a full slate of games scheduled for Dec. 26. Major junior hockey players have 10 days off, but the worlds top prospects will be busy when the world junior championship begins in Toronto and Montreal on Boxing Day.That travel schedule can be daunting for some, but Booth doesnt mind.I think theres always time to get in to the Bible, said the Maple Leafs left-winger. I think thats the biggest thing when youre on the road, is having your quiet time, being able to sit down, to read, to reflect, to pray. Those are things that you can do anywhere and I think thats one of the beautiful things about our job: the ability that we have to continue to worship while on the road.Laurie Boschman understands the challenges facing Christian hockey players. He was an NHLer for 14 years and has worked with Hockey Ministries International for 21 years, helping the faith-based Christian organization in its many camps and chapel programs.Based in Ottawa, Boschman leads players from the Senators in regular chapel programs and also helps co-ordinate chapel programs around the NHL.In his view, many players find themselves dissatisfied with their lives despite the money and prestige that comes with the NHL lifestyle. They may also be bothered by issues outside of the arena like relationship problems or the failing health of loved ones. For example, since were talking here before Christmas, we can talk about what the Bible says about the holiday, said Boschman in a phone interview with The Canadian Press. Is it about pressents? Is it about something more than that? And if it is, does the Bible address that? Players are interested in that because I think sometimes theres a perspective that players have about faith and its not based in fact. Rob Gronkowski Jersey. Its based in I thought it was this, or I thought it was that. We get to point them to the Scriptures and say This is what the Bible teaches and this is what its about.Booth agrees with Boschman that chapel gives players a chance to realize that theyre more than just their profession.I think when you get away from defining yourself by a sport it opens up your ability to make an impact away from the rink or have a greater purpose in life, said Booth. I dont think were put on this Earth just to play a sport. I think this sport is giving me such a huge advantage to reach the community, a platform to share things that matter. Were given so much. People look at us, wow the coolest job and it is a cool job and a great salary that comes with it. But those things all fade. Those things never satisfy.Theres no lack of demand for HMIs chapel programs. The non-denominational ministry works with more than 270 teams in over 30 leagues to provide chapel and counselling services for hockey players, coaches and other support staff. HMI also has hockey camps for children in Canada, the United States, Sweden, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Both Reimer and Booth point to regular chapel services as a resource that helps them bring balance to their lives on and off the ice.Obviously, being on the road and sometimes playing on Sundays or practising on Sundays, you dont get to go to church very often, said Reimer. Maybe once a month, if youre lucky. So to have that chapel — usually its once every two weeks, something you can go to with a couple of your teammates and the chaplain, just make sure youre staying focused and your eyes are on the right prize — its good to have that because it helps to keep you calm.Booth also feels that attending chapel and being a devout Christian helps him relate to his teammates, especially those who dont share his faith, because it fosters a sense of respect and tolerance in the locker-room.Love your teammates even though you guys share different beliefs, said Booth. You guys might have different lifestyles. You might not agree with everything they do but you always respect them, you love them, you get along with them, youre a good teammate. You do things with them. The biggest thing is not to judge. Theyre accepting of my beliefs and I accept their beliefs.I think thats where tolerance comes in and thats what makes humanity function: being able to tolerate other people with so many differences amongst us.
